Several factors contribute to the high number of road traffic fatalities in Sri Lanka. Excessive speeding is a leading cause of accidents, as it reduces reaction time and increases the severity of collisions. Additionally, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs severely impairs judgment and reaction times, leading to a higher risk of accidents. Distracted driving, particularly the use of mobile phones while behind the wheel, has also become a widespread issue. Poor road conditions, including inadequate infrastructure and poorly maintained roads, further exacerbate the situation. Moreover, the lack of consistent enforcement of traffic laws allows unsafe driving behaviors to persist, contributing to the overall high rate of fatalities.

Pedestrians and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable. In 2022, pedestrians accounted for 792 fatalities, and motorcyclists for 820. These groups are at higher risk due to their exposure and the lack of protective barriers.

The economic burden of road traffic accidents is substantial, encompassing medical costs, loss of productivity, and the financial strain on families affected by fatalities and injuries. The World Health Organization estimates that road traffic injuries can cause drastic economic losses not just to the individual, but to their families and the country as well.

The Sri Lankan government has implemented various measures to address road safety, including public awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public on safe driving practices. Additionally, there has been a focus on traffic law enforcement, with increased penalties for traffic violations to deter unsafe driving behaviors. The government has also made efforts to improve infrastructure by upgrading roads and installing traffic management systems to enhance safety and reduce accidents. These initiatives aim to create a safer driving environment and reduce road traffic fatalities.

To further reduce road traffic fatalities, several actions are recommended. Additionally, ongoing education programs should be conducted to raise awareness about the dangers of speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving. Investment in infrastructure development is also crucial, with a focus on adding road safety features such as pedestrian crossings, traffic signals, and clear road signage. Finally, community engagement plays a key role in fostering a culture of safe driving, and local communities should be actively involved in road safety initiatives to reinforce the importance of responsible driving habits.
